Starter Guide to Tunisian Crochet

February 3, 2025

I’m learning a new skill! Tunisian crochet is way easier than I thought it would be all thanks to my friend Mary Beth Temple and her new book: Starter Guide to Tunisian Crochet.

She really simplifies the instructions with tons of photos, captions, and diagrams to help beginners like me. On page 14, she shows the Tunisian Simple Stitch and I was able to get it on my hook and complete 8 rows in less than 10 minutes! I’m shocked!

>>> Starter Guide to Tunisian Crochet is currently $15.57 on Amazon US <<<
>>> Purchase a copy of Starter Guide to Tunisian Crochet HERE on the publishers website <<<

I personally know Mary Beth and I can tell you that her expertise in teaching crochet spans decades. She is an absolute wealth of knowledge. Not to mention she’s super fun to hang out with! You most likely have watched her video tutorials on Yarnspirations and not even known it was her.

Follow Mary Beth on Facebook and Instagram @MBTCreates or TikTok @emmbeetee

Here’s a picture that I adore of Mary Beth and I at the h+h Americas industry event last year! We both worked on the Red Heart Amigurumi Kit campaign when in launched.

If you are looking to try something new and easy, this might be just the thing to kick your crojo (crochet mojo) into high gear.

I’m using a 5mm Tunisian crochet hook and Red Heart Super Saver Retro Stripes.

Here is a little peek inside the book:

Get started in Tunisian crochet!

  • 16 projects including an Afghan blanket, baby blanket, shawl, potholders, scarf, hat, and more
  • Beginner to advanced patterns start simple then grow your skills as you crochet, with some pieces having more than one type of stitch
  • Helpful tips on yarn selection and the hooks you’ll need for the projects
  • Author Mary Beth Temple is a designer and teacher of crochet and knitting techniques from yarn crafts to cosplay and the author of over a dozen books

Learn how to make beautiful blankets, clothing, and home décor with the look of knitting and the ease of crochet!

Tunisian crochet (also known as Afghan crochet) is a blend between knitting and crocheting that offers the best aspects of both techniques. It produces a fabric that is similar to a knit but worked on a hook. It’s quick and easy to do, creates a dense, durable fabric, and has become one of the most popular approaches for today’s crocheters. The finished projects are sturdy and flexible!

Inside this beginner’s guide, Mary Beth Temple offers 16 must-make projects using her favorite stitch designs, plus a section on yarn selection and the hooks needed to crochet this type of stitch. Temple is the author of more than a dozen books, including Finger Knitting and Arm Knitting. When not writing, she can be found teaching and creating instructional videos on Craftsy, Yarnspirations, The Knitting Circle, Creative Crochet Corner, and Made it Myself TV.

The super cute patterns and projects for beginner to advanced crocheters include an Afghan blanket, baby blanket, shawl, scarf, hat, and more! These projects are designed to appeal to needlecrafters of all skill levels, ranging from the ease of a simple potholder to a more challenging poncho. A blanket project serves as a stitch sample for crochet enthusiasts to work a variety of Tunisian stitches in one beautiful piece!

Find all the inspiration and instruction you need to start stitching your own beautiful projects, with Starter Guide to Tunisian Crochet!

Alright, so I’m learning a new skill: Tunisian crochet. I have to say, I was a bit nervous about it at first because I’m still relatively new to crochet in general. But my friend Mary Beth Temple has this book called “Starter Guide to Tunisian Crochet,” and she’s been teaching me. Let me tell you, her book is amazing for beginners like me.

One thing that really helps is all the photos, captions, and diagrams. They make it so much easier to understand what’s going on with each stitch. For example, on page 14, she shows the Tunisian Simple Stitch. I tried it out, and I was able to get it on my hook and complete 8 rows in less than 10 minutes! That’s pretty impressive for someone who’s just starting out.

Mary Beth is not only an expert in crochet but also super fun to be around. I’ve known her for a while, and she’s been involved in a lot of teaching and video tutorials, like the ones on Yarnspirations. She’s got decades of experience, which really shows in her teaching style and her books.

If you’re thinking about trying Tunisian crochet, I highly recommend her book. It’s currently available on Amazon US for $15.57, which is a great price. Alternatively, you can purchase it directly from the publisher’s website. I think it’s worth every penny, especially considering how much it’s helped me get started.

I personally used a 5mm Tunisian crochet hook and Red Heart Super Saver Retro Stripes yarn for my project. The yarn is colorful and easy to work with, which makes the learning process more enjoyable.

In the book, there are 16 projects ranging from easy to more advanced, so there’s something for everyone. Whether you want to make an Afghan blanket, a baby blanket, a shawl, potholders, a scarf, or a hat, you’ll find patterns to suit your skill level and interests.

One of the things I appreciate about Tunisian crochet is that it combines elements of both knitting and crocheting, which gives the fabric a unique look and feel. It’s dense and durable, making it perfect for items that need to hold their shape well.

Mary Beth also provides tips on yarn selection and the types of hooks you’ll need for different projects. That was really helpful for me because I wasn’t sure which hooks to buy at first.

Overall, I’m really enjoying learning Tunisian crochet with Mary Beth’s book. It’s been a fun and rewarding experience, and I can already see improvements in my technique after just a few practice sessions.

If you’re looking to try something new in your crocheting journey or want to enhance your skills, I definitely recommend picking up a copy of “Starter Guide to Tunisian Crochet.” It’s a fantastic resource that will help you get started on the right foot.
