Crochet Hat and Mini Pumpkin with Red Heart Granny Square Petite Yarn

September 9, 2025

Fall is the perfect time to experiment with new yarns, and I’ve been having so much fun with Red Heart Granny Square All-in-One Petite in the shade Linen. It’s a gorgeous blend of browns, beiges, and blacks that automatically creates a rustic, seasonal palette without needing to switch colors yourself. Whether you’re making granny squares or working rows of single crochet, the color changes flow naturally and give every project a unique look.

A Granny Square Ribbed Hat

The hat starts with three petite granny squares stitched with this yarn. After whip stitching the squares together, I grabbed a coordinating solid—Red Heart Super Saver in Buff Beige—and crocheted evenly along one edge of the joined squares (about 38 SC stitches across). From there, it’s simple back-loop-only single crochet rows until you have about 50 rows. Join the edges into a circle with SC stitches, then SC decrease around the top to close. Add a faux fur pom pom and flip the brim for a flexible, stretchy hat that’s as stylish as it is warm!

This design really shows off the color transitions in the squares while the solid edging ties it all together.
Hat fits older child to adult.

This is the backside of the hat.

Petite Ribbed Pumpkin

For a quick fall favorite, I used the same yarn to crochet a mini ribbed pumpkin—no squares required! Because the color changes happen naturally, the pumpkin gets fun stripes without any extra effort.

Pumpkin: Chain 16, SC in the second chain from the hook and work SC to the end. Continue in back loops only until you’ve worked through 3 full sequences of the color changes (beige, black, cream). This should be about 36 rows. Join the short edges to form a tube, cinch the top and bottom closed with long strand of yarn and tapestry needle, and stuff with polyfil before closing.

Stem:
With brown yarn, make a magic ring, chain 1, and work 4 SC.
Round 2: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (4 SC)
Round 3: 2 SC in first, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (6 SC)
Round 4-5: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (6 SC)
Sew it to the top of your pumpkin, and you’re done!

Finished pumpkin measures about 4×4 inches.

The result is a farmhouse-inspired pumpkin with cozy stripes. Perfect for decorating mantels, tables, or fall centerpieces.

Why This Yarn Works So Well

The beauty of Red Heart Granny Square Petite yarn is that you can let the colorwork do the heavy lifting. You don’t need to carry multiple skeins or worry about weaving in endless ends. Whether you’re making accessories, décor, or blankets, the yarn does the design work for you.

I love that I can use it both traditionally (with granny squares) and creatively (like the ribbed pumpkin), and the results look polished and intentional every time.

Why Granny Square All-in-One Yarn is a Game-Changer

If you haven’t tried Red Heart Granny Square All-in-One Yarn yet, now is the time! This yarn is designed to take the guesswork out of color changes and granny square making. Each skein is dyed so the colors flow in perfect sequence—no need to juggle multiple balls of yarn or weave in endless ends. It truly does the colorwork for you!

I’ve already had so much fun experimenting with this yarn family:

  • My Striped Pumpkin pattern used the Grande version of this yarn to create bold farmhouse-style stripes without any extra effort. SEE IT HERE
  • My Polar Bear Scarf Pillow Panels used the yarn to add instant color-blocked detail along the bottom of each piece. SEE IT HERE

And here’s the best part: Yarnspirations is having a sitewide sale right now! It’s the perfect chance to grab a few skeins and see for yourself how this yarn transforms your crochet projects with zero extra effort.
