Crochet Zamboni Applique

Beep beep! Clear the ice and make way for the Zamboni! This ice-resurfacing machine was one of the most requested designs in the entire series, and I’m so excited to share it as the 6th crochet applique in our Winter Activities Crochet Along!

Whether you’re a hockey family, figure skating fan, or simply love everything winter, this little Zamboni is sure to bring a smile to your face. Around our house, we’ve spent countless hours at the rink watching hockey games, figure skating practices, synchronized skating competitions, and public skate sessions, so adding a Zamboni to this blanket felt like a must!

Our Winter Activities Crochet-Along is a 12-month project filled with cozy winter themes, ice sports, and snowy fun. Each appliqué can stand on its own or be turned into a full blanket as we go.

Each design celebrates a favorite winter pastime, making this blanket a fun project for skaters, skiers, hockey players, snowboarders, and winter enthusiasts alike.

If you’ve ever spent time at an ice rink, you know the excitement when the Zamboni rolls out onto the ice. It’s the signal that a fresh, smooth skating surface is on the way!

Named after inventor Frank Zamboni, the Zamboni has become an iconic symbol of ice sports. And judging by the number of requests I received, many of you have fond memories of watching one glide across the rink too.

For our family, this square feels especially fitting with both hockey and figure skating playing such a big role in our lives

Materials:
– Red Heart Super Saver in colors Royal Blue, White, Saffron Yellow, and Black
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle

Crochet Zamboni Applique
with white yarn
Chain 17, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn
Row 2-6: SC in each stitch acroos, chain 1, turn (16 SC)
join in blue yarn
Row 7-11: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (16 SC)
Row 12: DC in first 5, HDC in next 5, SC in last 6, chain 1, turn
Row 13: SC in first 6, HDC in next 5, DC in last 5,
join in yellow yarn
now working along left edge
Row 14: SC down side of Zamboni so you have a total of 15 stitches, chain 1, turn
Row 15-16: SC in each stitch across, chain 1 turn
Fasten off leaving enough long tails to stitch down to your square.

Zamboni Seat:
with white yarn
chain 7, SC in second chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn
Row 2-3: SC in each stitch across, chain 1 turn (6 SC)
join in blue yarn
Row 4-6: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 7: SC in first 3 stitches, leave remaining stitches unworked, chain 1, turn (3 SC)
Row 8-11: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn (3 SC)
Row 12: 3 HDC in middle stitch, slip stitch to join to last stitch, fasten off leaving long tail.

Zamboni Wheels (make 2):
with white yarn
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 8 SC in ring, join
join in black yarn
2 SC in each stitch around, join, fasten off leaving long tail (16 SC)

Assembly:
Match up the seat to the Zamboni so the stripes are lined up. Stitch on to square. Stitch wheels over bottom of Zamboni so they are overlapping.

Optional: Stitch on a little black steering wheel.

Feel free to customize your Zamboni with your favorite team colors, rink colors, or even match your local ice arena with a small logo.
