Yarn Basket Halloween Costume

October 16, 2016

What else would an avid crocheter and yarn addict do for a Halloween costume?! LOL! I had a bit of fun dressing up my little Zoe in a Yarn Basket Halloween Costume! I don’t know how well this costume will work for trick-or-treating but it was fun to throw together and might be a good one for a Halloween party or costume contest. Plus, the yarn is NOT ruined! I can save and re-use almost all of it! I also used supplies I had at home and I think many of you could rummage through your stash to create something similar!

I used:
– 1 round laundry basket. I’ve had this one for years and believe I originally purchased it from Target but you could easily pick one up at the Dollar Store!
– Bernat Blanket BIG Yarn in brown (2 skeins) – currently only available at Michaels Craft Stores.
– Bernat Blanket Yarn (assorted colors from my personal stash) wound in balls.
– Heavy duty scissors
– Hot glue gun
– Bobby pins
– A plain crocheted earflap hat (I used worsted weight yarn). You can use the base pattern in THIS POST.

The Bernat Blanket BIG Yarn is extremely thick and chunky and covers fairly quickly when woven in between the laundry basket slats. And the end result does look like a woven basket! You could use another chunky yarn for this process.

With some heavy duty scissors, cut the bottom out of the basket.

Hot glue on the yarn around the rough edges and around the bottom and top edge of the laundry basket.
Unfortunately the yarn that is glued down will not be re-useable.
You will want to also tie on two strands of the Bernat BIG yarn as straps so you can wear the basket.

Make large balls of yarn to place in your yarn basket and smaller balls of yarn that you can bobby pin to the top of your crochet hat. Don’t go light on the bobby pins. Add as many as necessary. Add a crochet hook for an extra touch!

My costume plan was not exactly fool-proof. You will need to stuff the bottom of the basket to allow the balls of yarn to hang over the top. I placed two large skeins of Bernat Blanket yarn on the bottom of the basket (once Zoe had stepped in) as “filler.” This obviously isn’t the most comfortable scenario. You may want to tape/glue/attach the balls if you are planning on wearing this out for a longer period of time. As you can see from the photo, I made the hat a bit big for my daughter (oops!) so I had to fold it over for the photo. Hopefully you won’t be crocheting a hat at midnight and mis-calculating your child’s head size as I did 🙂

Other than those few little hiccups in my plan for a Yarn Basket Halloween Costume, I think it’s a pretty cute idea and you could take this tutorial and execute it as you wish!

Happy Halloween to all my fellow crocheters and yarn lovers!

I love it! Your daughter is so adorable which makes this costume even better. I’d like to make this for one of my children but since the youngest is 21, I don’t think they’d appreciate it. Grandchildren…..

I don’t understand why you cut the bottom of the basket out though.

Because the wearer’s legs have to go through there. 🙂

Where to buy a cheap glue gun? Last time, I bought one in Wallmart for $15. Can’t imagine buying one each month, that’s a lot of money. Either way, have 365 Days of Positivity! 🙂
