DIY Musical Instruments

We treated the boys to Sesame Street Live over the weekend. It was such a fun show and both boys really enjoyed it. Big brother sat in awe with his mouth half open for the first part and then danced and ran around after intermission. Little brother sat and clapped the entire show!

The theme of the show was Elmo Makes Music and we learned that music is all around us. You don’t need to have real musical instruments to make music. I thought this would be a good opportunity to continue this idea and make our own music at home. So we made paper roll maracas and a paper plate tambourine.

First, I let big brother decorate the rolls and plates with markers, crayons, and pieces of cut paper. I closed off one end of the paper rolls with duct tape and let him fill the small roll with rice and big roll with beans.   I then taped off the other end. We discovered that the rice made a different sound than the beans did. Then we put beans in between the two plates and I stapled them together. We also discovered that the beans between the plates made a different sound than the beans in the paper roll!

The great children’s book author, Maurice Sendak, passed away this week. And in his honor we had a wild “musical” rumpus after bath time last night. The boys dressed in their super hero jammies and we had a  good time dancing and shaking our new instruments. The best part was when big brother turned over a laundry basket and started using it as a drum!

And I couldn’t resist sharing this last picture :o)
