Now is the time to come together and help this community however we can. I have decided to help Heidi from Snappy Tots on her "Beanies for Brave Students" project. Heidi has asked the crochet community to help crochet 600 hats in green and white (their school colors) for the brave survivors at Sandy Hook Elementary. I crocheted my first 3 hats last night and plan on buying more yarn to make more. I used Vanna's Choice yarn in Kelly Green and White. They are asking for only Green, White or Green and White striped beanies. If you want to help by crocheting a beanie, please be sure to read all the "rules" before you begin. You can find more information about this wonderful project HERE. Thank you Heidi!
Here are the beanies I made last night using Vanna's Choice Kelly Green and White. I went to 3 different yarn stores today and could not find any more green yarn. I will be ordering more online through Amazon: Lion Brand Yarn 860-172C Vanna's Choice Yarn, Kelly Green
You can also use Red Heart with Love in Clover. I also couldn't find it in stores but it is also available on Amazon: Red Heart with Love E400.1620 Yarn, Clover
Here is a list of other projects going on to help Newtown and the victims of Sandy Hook. I am sure there are many more. Please list any you know of in the comments. It is heartwarming to know that there are still good people in this world that are going to great lengths to help in whatever way the can. THANK YOU!

Hi! I'm a blogger that also runs the website, LinkyHere.com. I'm writing a post about bloggers offering support for the Newtown community for the LinkyHere blog on Monday. I'd love to include your Handmade Help project in it...basically include info about it with a link to this post. Is that OK?

ReplyDeleteGREAT article and I LOVE that you made samples! Thank you for spreading the word.
ReplyDeleteHello :) I am a fan of your patterns and I am also wanting to participate in making these hats but I am having a hard time finding a good pattern that isn't worked in a spiral. Do you have a link to a good pattern you could share? Thank you!
ReplyDeleteIf you go to the ladies facebook page she is sharing the pattern on there - its a non profit pattern :)
DeleteThanks for spreading the word about this effort. I just made one and will send tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteYes, what a tragic event that was for Sandy Hook. I cried and cried about that. If I could crochet, I'd make a green beanie for them. I do send many prayers for these people.
ReplyDeleteI have 5 beanies made already and plan on making more of them, do you know where I can send them?
ReplyDeleteI forgot to mention I am not on Facebook
ReplyDeleteJust a heads up that I just received word that Newtown is not accepting anymore donations (of any kind). Whatever donations they do receive, will be given to other charities in the area. They did say if we wanted to donate in their honor, to think about organizations in our own area.
ReplyDeleteIs it confirmed Newtown is not accepting any more donations? I just spent all day driving around trying to find the right color of green yarn to make some beanies. I would still love to do this if it is still needed. I did try and find info online but was not successful. Thanks for the great blog! I love it and have had fun making some of your projects!
