I have a little dreidel, I made it out of…YARN! 🙂 Hanukkah is just a couple weeks away and this crochet dreidel hat is a fun accessory or gift for those celebrating!
Materials:
– Worsted weight yarn. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in White, Colonial Blue, and Little Boy Blue.
– Size H or I (5.5MM) crochet hook. I recommend an H hook but I couldn’t find mine so I ended up using an I hook for the one pictured.
– Tapestry needle
– Blue felt
– Hot glue gun
Abbreviations:
SC = Single Crochet
SC Decrease = Single Crochet Decrease
DC = Double Crochet

Dreidel Top:
With dark blue yarn…
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 3: In back loops only, SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 4: Now working in both loops, SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 5: In back loops only, SC Decrease, SC in next, repeat around
stuff lightly with poly fill
Round 6: SC Decrease until closed.
Fasten off leaving long tail to sew onto top of hat.
Dreidel Stem:
With light blue yarn…
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 6 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: In back loops only, SC in each stitch around, continue to work in rounds (do not join)
Round 3-7: now working in both loops, SC in each stitch around.
Fasten off leaving long tail.
Stuff lightly if needed.
Sew on to top of the round piece.
Sew your top and stem onto the center top of hat.
Now you will surface slip stitch crochet 4 lines (think of it like making a plus sign on the top of your hat), each line ending about halfway down the side of your hat. Fasten off but leave a really long tail after each surface crochet line because you will pick it up later. If surface crochet feels too difficult, feel free to create long chains and then sew them on to the side of the hat.
Now you will want to eyeball a space at the bottom of your hat, right in-between each space. See where the scissors are sitting in the picture below. Putting a stitch marker there will help you.
Slip stitch the bottom “v” of each dreidel side. I stopped my “v” right before the SC stitches in my hat.
Use the template to cut out your letters from felt. If you are lazy (like me), hot glue them to your hat. You can also stitch them on with a sewing needle and thread.
Hebrew letters on the dreidel: Nun, Hay, Gimel, Shin
At the last minute I decided my dreidel needed a “line” across the bottom to separate the point from the square body so I surface crocheted a line around the entire hat. This part is optional but I like how it completes the dreidel design 🙂
Dreidel cannot be played (or worn) without a chocolate coin (gelt) prize!

Love your hats! I've been making loads of them recently. One question: how do you decide whether to use DC or HDC?

I love your patterns. I was wondering, does the chain two in this hat and the Christmas ornament hat count as a DC. I am having trouble…my count is off…too many each round.
Thank you
