Baymax Crochet Hat

March 2, 2015

Big Hero 6 is now out on DVD and Blu-ray! And a Big Hero 6 movie night is not complete without a Baymax crochet hat! I have a feeling there will be a lot of little Baymax’s trick-or-treating this coming Halloween so if your little one is a Big Hero 6 fan, you might want to get a head start on this hat! Since it is all one color it actually works up pretty quickly!

Baymax Head:
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1

Round 12: SC Decrease, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 13: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1

Round 14: SC Decrease until closed.

Be sure to sew on buttons and line of black yarn between the button eyes after round 13. Then stuff with polyfil and continue to round 14.
Fasten off leaving long tail.
To make bigger head and arms use a larger hook and/or thicker yarn. For the head pattern, you can also increase one more time after Round 2… So Round 3 would look like this: 2 SC in first, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (30 SC).
Sew head onto top of hat. I stitched it on twice for extra support.
Baymax Arms: make 2
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 3-4: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 5: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 1 (25 Sc)
Round 6-8: SC in each stitch around (25 SC)
Round 9: SC Decrease, SC in next 3, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 10-11: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 12: SC Decrease, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 13-18: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Round 19: SC Decrease, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1
Round 20-24: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1
Fasten off leaving long tail.
Stuff lightly with polyfil and sew top of the arms closed.
To make arms longer, feel free to add on rounds during the repeat rows (3-4, 6-8, 10-11, 13-18, or at the end).  To make arms shorter, take off rows during the repeating rows or at the end.
The arms should hang over the bottom of the hat.
Sew arms onto the hat about 3 rows down from the top on each side (the side is where the hat creases when laid flat).  Then carry the tapestry needle down through the middle back of the arm, sewing it down to the had in a couple places. When you get to the bottom, stitch the edge of hat onto the bottom of the arms.

I love this so much! I cried my eyes out watching Big Hero 6, why do all the best kids movies have to be so sad at points? I love how you make things based on movie characters and the such. I was just wondering if you've ever been asked about copyright? I'm starting up a blog and I've been too scared to create amigurumi inspired by big brands. Is it alright if it's a free pattern? Anyway keep up the great work, I love reading your blog everyday 😀

If you click on the 'printer friendly' button at the bottom of the pattern, you can select pdf and save it. I use it all the time so I have access to patterns 'on the go'.

It was a quick and cute project! My son requested legs and I used your extended arm for the legs. He really loved this hat, thank you so very much!

I once tried making something similar for a kid in my family who was obsessed with Baymax, and I expected it to be more complicated than it actually was, but the clean design made the whole process surprisingly smooth, especially without switching between too many colors, the only part that really required patience was getting the small details to sit evenly so it looked right from different angles, somewhere in the middle I even caught myself getting distracted and checking bethlehem lights phone number before returning to finish it, and that short break actually helped me see what needed adjusting, projects like this feel simple at first but end up being really satisfying once everything comes together naturally
