See You Later Crochet Alligator

June 5, 2016

Croc6

My kids only have one more week of school left this year so I’m busy crocheting little end of year gifts for their teachers! Our elementary school’s mascot is the Crocodile which inspired this project. Even though my gift tag will say “After While Crocodile” I thought anyone could use this cute Crochet Alligator Gift Card Holder with the phrase “See You Later, Alligator!” A fun way to say goodbye and thank them for a great year!

Materials:
– Worsted Weight Yarn. I used Bernat Super Value in Lush. You can purchase this yarn directly from Yarnspirations.com!
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Velcro Dots (You can purchase them HERE)
– Dark Green Felt
– Comic Safety Eyes (You can purchase them HERE)
– Tapestry Needle
– Poly-fil Stuffing (optional)
– Hot Glue Gun

Abbreviations:
Magic Ring Tutorial
SC = Single Crochet
SC Decrease = Single Crochet Decrease

Finished Size: Approx 10 inches from top to tail.

Round 32: SC Decrease, SC in next, repeat around
Round 33: SC Decrease, SC, in next two, repeat around
Round 34- 37: SC in each stitch around (9 SC)
Fasten off but don’t sew shut (yet).

Attach comic safety eyes to head. Free free to lightly stuff with poly-fil. I didn’t but there is room for stuffing!
Sew snout/mouth shut. Make a few extra whip stitches on the corner edges that you are sewing closed so it bulges like nostrils.
Cut a skinny strip of darker green felt and cut triangle ridges. Middle spike strip should be about 7 inches long and the side spikes about 3 inches long.
Hot glue (or you could sew) the strips on to the alligator back.
Alligator Legs:
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 6 SC in ring, continue to SC in rounds
Round 2: 2 SC in first, SC in next two stitches, repeat around (8 SC)
Round 3: SC in each stitch around (8 SC)
Round 4: SC Decrease, SC in next 2, repeat around.
Round 5: SC Decrease until closed, don’t fasten off, chain 5, SC in second chain from hook and rest of the way down chain, join to bottom of chain, fasten off leaving tail to see onto alligator body.
Sew legs onto sides of body. Stick round velcro patches on the underside feet. Hot glue (even though they are sticky) for an extra hold.
Your alligator can now hold a gift card or he can attach and “hug” any small-medium sized object! Connect him to a gift bag, wine bottle neck, mug handle, pack of pencils, skinny package of chocolates and/or candy, and more! You could even use it as a bookmark and someone else suggest a mug cozy if you attach a button for the nostrils and a loop on the tail to connect it! Leave your other ideas in the comments!
