Meet the Yarn Zip: The Easiest Way to Add a Zipper to Crochet & Knit Projects

June 21, 2026

Have you ever finished a crochet or knit project and wished it had a zipper but didn’t want to wrestle with sewing one in? That’s exactly where the Coats & Clark Yarn Zip comes in!

I recently shared a sneak peek of Watermelon Coin Purse pattern on social media and was surprised by how many people asked about the zipper. Some had never seen the Yarn Zip before, while others completely forgot it existed! I thought this would be the perfect time to give the Yarn Zip its own spotlight.

What is a Yarn Zip?

he Yarn Zip is a zipper designed specifically for crochet, knitting, and other yarn crafts. Instead of trying to sew through a traditional zipper tape, the Yarn Zip features a loosely woven channel that allows you to attach it directly to your project using yarn.

Simply crochet, knit, or stitch through the channel with matching yarn and the zipper becomes part of your project. No sewing machine required. No tiny needle holes. No fighting with bulky zipper tape.

For many crocheters, it’s one of those clever notions that makes you wonder why all zippers aren’t made this way!

Available Sizes

The Yarn Zip comes in two styles:

  • 9-inch Closed-End Zipper – perfect for pouches, coin purses, notions bags, and other accessories.
  • 22-inch Separating Zipper – great for sweaters, cardigans, jackets, and other wearable projects.

For my upcoming Watermelon Coin Purse, I’m using the 9-inch version, which fits the project beautifully.
The Yarn Zip is currently available in both black and white colors in both sizes.

A Closer Look

The woven channel that runs alongside the zipper gives your yarn a place to grip without puckering or distorting your stitches. You will want to grab a smaller size crochet hook (Size 3.25mm or smaller) or a tapestry needle. Even my thicker tapestry needles glides right through making stitching so easy!

Why I Love It

As someone who primarily designs crochet projects, I’ve always preferred solutions that keep the entire project in the yarn world.

The Yarn Zip allows you to:

  • Add professional-looking closures
  • Avoid hand-sewing traditional zippers
  • Create cleaner finishes on bags and pouches
  • Easily add zippers to knit or crochet garments

It’s a simple idea, but it removes one of the biggest hurdles many makers face when finishing projects.

On Sale Right Now!

If you’ve been curious about trying one, now is a great time.

At that price, it’s worth picking up a few to keep in your project stash for future bags, pouches, and sweaters.

Watch It in Action

I recently shared a quick reel showing the Yarn Zip up close, and it has been getting a lot of attention from crocheters who had never seen it before.

You can watch the video here:

And yes, the little watermelon pouch that started all of this is on the way!

It works perfectly with the 9-inch Yarn Zip. Stay tuned for the updated free pattern, plus step-by-step photos showing exactly how I attached the zipper.

I can’t wait to share it with you!
