Ollie the Owl has a new look! Those Crochet Cartoon Eyes work so well as a replacement for the safety eyes I used in the original pattern. This crochet owl has become a fan favorite over the past two years so this is also a good time to give you some updates.

O’Go yarn has been discontinued. I am really bummed about it because Ollie was specifically created to be used with Bernat Blanket O’Go yarn. Fortunately we have lots of replacement yarn options and this pattern can continue to be stitched up!
Option #1: You can absolutely still use Bernat Blanket Yarn for Ollie the Owl. It is still available in 300g or 600g skeins just not in O’Go format. Lots of color options as well! Option #2: You can crochet Ollie the Owl using worsted weight yarn! I am using a double strand of Red Heart Super Saver yarn to make all the parts (except the cartoon eyes. That is a single strand pattern). It turned out great! Just hold to strands of yarn together and use the size K/10.5 (6.5 mm) hook as stated in the pattern.
I do want to mention that I added an extra two rounds of single crochets to the body. I felt like it needed a bit more height. So after Round 15 you will make 2 more rounds of SC in each stitch around. Then continue on to the head part of the pattern as written. It also helps to add an extra round of SC stitches to the wings and feet.
OR you can crochet Ollie the Owl just as the pattern is written with a single strand of Red Heart Super Saver Yarn! He turned out so small and cute. A miniature crochet owl that measures about 5.5 inches tall by 6 inches wide! ALSO I used the smaller version of the cartoon eyes for the single strand owl.
For the versions you see here in this post, I am using Red Heart Super Saver yarn in colors Perfect Pink and Shocking Pink. For the double strand version use the K hook and for the single strand version use the H hook. Use the larger 2 inch cartoon eyes for the double strand owl and the smaller 1 inch eyes for the single strand mini owl.
For reference, the double stranded worsted weight yarn version of Ollie the Owl is still a bit smaller than the original I crocheted using Bernat Blanket Yarn.
What colors will you use?! You can’t go wrong with the plethora of shades from Red Heart Super Saver!
