Crochet Hearts in a Row Blanket

January 28, 2025

It all started with the Hearts in a Row Hat and now we have a Hearts in a Row BLANKET!

I’m using the brand new Caron Simply Me yarn which is an absolute dream to work with! It might be my new favorite. It’s a bulky weight but only slightly thicker than red heart super saver. It’s super smooth and soft and available in an array of absolutely stunning colors.

For this blanket I am using colors Dusted Lilac, Pretty in Pink, and Malachite. You only need 3 balls (one of each color) to make the entire blanket! NOTE: if you want to make the ribbed border, you will need a second skein of pink. OR make a simple single crochet border with the leftover yarn for each ball.

Materials:
– 3 Balls of Caron Simply Me yarn. I’m using Dusted Lilac, Pretty in Pink, and Malachite.
>>> Shop Caron Simply Me HERE on Yarnspirations.com <<<
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Tapestry Needle

Finished size: Approximately 25 inches wide x 33 inches tall
Feel free to make your blanket bigger by doubling the starting chain or adding on in multiples of 4 (plus 2 for your starting chain)

Special Stitch = Heart Cluster
Yarn over pull through first stitch, pull through 2 loops (making the first half of your DC), yarn over and pull up through same stitch, pull through 2 loops, you should now have 3 loops on your hook, working in the next stitch repeat the same 2 stitches so you have 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 5 stitches.

Special Stitch = Elongated Double Crochet (Long DC)
When you are working your DC stitches between the heart clusters, one of your double crochets will reach down to the previous round. Yarn over pull through bringing up that loop up to the height of the double crochet before it. Yarn over pull through two loops. Yarn over pull through last two loops.

Note: I fastened off my yarn after each row when I need to make a color change. I didn’t find it difficult to weave them in when I was finished. It took me about 30 minutes to weave in my ends while watching TV.

Hearts in a Row Blanket:
starting with purple yarn
Chain 70, DC in the 3rd chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, (68 DC)
join in pink yarn, chain 1, turn
Row 2: SC in each stitch across (68 SC)
join in green yarn, chain 2, turn
Row 3: DC in each stitch across
join in pink yarn, chain 2, turn
Row 4: Heart Cluster over first two stitches, chain 2 and skip a stitch, heart cluster over next two stitches, chain 2 and skip a stitch, repeat all the way down row making 23 heart cluster, chain 1 after the last heart cluster (this is the first stitch you will work in on the next row)
join in green yarn, chain 2, turn
Row 5: DC in the chain stitch, now working in the first chain 2 space make a DC + Long DC + DC, reach over the next chain space and make a DC + Long DC + DC, repeat down row making a DC in the last stitch (the chain 2 of the pink yarn)
join in pink yarn, chain 1, turn
Row 6: SC in each stitch across (68 SC)
join in purple yarn, chain 2, turn
Row 7-9: DC in each stitch across, chain 2, turn
join in pink yarn after round 9, chain 1, turn
Repeat Rows 2-9 until you have 8 stripes of hearts in your blanket
Make only one row of purple to end the blanket (instead of 3 rows), and then SC around the entire blanket edge in purple. Continue the border by join in pink yarn and make a SC in each stitch around the entire edge and a SC + chain 2 + SC in each corner. End the blanket here or create a ribbed border (additional ball of yarn will be needed)

RIBBED BORDER:
Please be sure and watch THIS TUTORIAL from my friend Daisy Farm Crafts on how to make a single crochet ribbed border. I love this technique because you don’t need to sew the ribbing on separately, it is crochet right onto the edge of the blanket! It’s basically a chain 7 (or however long/short your want your ribbed border), SC in each chain until you get back to the hat edge, slip stitch in two stitches along the hat edge and then SC in the back loops of the ribbing and repeat. She has a VERY easy tutorial to follow and you can use this border on many different projects.

Since we are turning our work instead of crocheting in rounds, the hearts are smaller and more defined on the front side and appear as puffy hearts on the backside!

This is the front:

This is the back:

The perfect blanket for your Valentine!

Do the Ch STS at beginning of row count as a stitch? Cannot get the heart rows to work out, always a stitch left at the end, do we join the next colour in that st?
