Crochet Basketball Hat Pattern

March 5, 2013

Who’s ready for March Madness?! In our house we like fill out brackets and watch the NCAA tournament every March. This year I thought it might be fun if the boys had basketball hats! But it doesn’t just have to be for boys.. you can add one of my Simple Spring Crocheted Flowers to make it a little more “girly.”

Before we begin let me remind you of some basic directions you should follow while crocheting my hats:
– Always start your rounds in the same stitch as your chain.
– Always join your rounds to the first DC, NOT the chain.
– Your last stitch should be in the stitch before your chain.
– Do NOT count the chain 2 as a stitch.

(You can find pictures of how to start and join your rounds HERE)

Materials:

– Orange worsted weight yarn (I used Vanna’s Choice Lion Brand)
– Black worsted weight yarn
– Crochet hook size H-8 (5.0 mm)
– Tapestry needle

Abbreviations:
ch – chain
sl st- slip stitch
SC – Single Crochet
DC – Double Crochet
Magic Ring – Find a great tutorial including video HERE

Basketball stripes:
Chain 3 long chains with black yarn. Be sure to leave a long tail on one end. You will want to loosely measure the chains around the hat to make sure you have made them long enough. Don’t be afraid to make them extra long. You can always unravel them at the end.
Stitch one directly down the center, and the other two should curve along the sides. Almost in the shape of a half circle. You will stitch them on by taking your tapestry needle and weaving the long tail in and out of the chains. Feel free to pin them down or lightly tape them on so they hold their place while you are stitching them on.

You are such a great designer, Sarah! This is so simple and easy, but it still takes a designer like you to put it together. Thanks for sharing at Hookin ON Hump Day!

What is your gauge for this hat? I made the 6-9 mo hat, but it fits my 3 year old. I’m guessing my stitching is too loose.

Hey! I used to be just wanting to know how this operates for your teenagers. I will view it could well be suitable for primary, but you may be wondering what about Jr. Substantial and Secondary school (I have one main involving each) Does indeed the girl deal with it inside her publication (The Workbox Reserve? ) I have a small property, some children and one in route u still cannot imagine using much place!

You really make it appear really easy together with your presentation but I find this topic to be actually something that I feel I would by no means understand. It seems too complex and extremely extensive for me. I’m taking a look forward for your next put up, I¡¦ll attempt to get the hold of it!
