Got a little bit of Bernat Blanket yarn sitting around your house?! With just a small amount of this soft, fluffy, and bulky yarn, you can make a cute little crochet plush owl! I almost didn’t post this because I’m not completely happy with how it turned out but Zoe loved the owl so much that I said to myself “well, if she loves it, I’m sure a few of you will love it too!” But I do have a second owl on my hook because you can never have enough crochet owl patterns at your fingertips! LOL!
Materials:
- Size J Crochet Hook
- Bernat Blanket Yarn. I used pixie pink for the body (from the brights line) and white for the eyes. Shop all colors at Yarnspirations.com
- Tapestry Needle
- 12mm black safety eyes. Purchase a big box HERE on Amazon for only $6! (aff)
- Poly-fil stuffing
- Triangle button for nose (purchased at JOANN’s) – optional
Finished size: Approx. 7 inches tall and 9 inches wide (including wing span)
Owl Body Pattern:
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 10 SC in ring, join to first SC, chain 1 (10 SC)
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (20 SC)
Round 3: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Round 4-14: SC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (30 SC)
Fasten off leaving long tail to sew top together (but first sew face on). Sew in all other loose ends on inside.
Owl Eyes: (make 2)
Magic ring, chain 2 and make 12 DC in ring, pull tight and join to first DC. Leave long tail for sewing onto owl body.
Add safety eyes to center of magic ring.
Stitch eyes onto body of owl.
Sew on little button nose or use orange yarn to stitch on a triangle for the nose under the eyes
Owl Wings: (make 2)
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 4 SC in ring, join to first SC, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in first, SC in next, repeat around, join, chain 1 (6 SC)
Round 3: 2 SC in first, SC in next 2, repeat around, join, chain 1 (8 SC)
Round 4: SC in each stitch around until you get to last stitch, make 3 SC in last stitch, join, chain 1 (10 SC)
Round 5: SC in each stitch around, join, (10 SC)
Fasten off leaving long tail to sew wings onto side of owl body.
Stuff owl with poly-fil and stitch up the top with tapestry needle, working under the top of the SC stitches. Corners at the top will naturally stick up a little, forming ears 🙂
Little heart is pictured above but decided not to use it 🙂 More on that when I post the second owl I’m working on!
I think this squishy soft owl would make a great gift for Valentine’s Day! Especially if you decide to use pink or red yarn. Be sure to use the hashtag #repeatcrafterme if you make this owl and post it on social media!

Love, love, love the owl and cannot wait to make it. I have to ask tho, are you happy with the eyes? I bought them on your recommendation and threw them away. The backs are plastic, and I found that with a small amount of prying they could be pulled out. Sadly, I wasn’t confident in gifting or selling my items with those eyes. I hope to had better luck. Thanks for the pattern though. Going to make one tonight, with different eyes.

You could always do a slip knot with black yarn if you’re not comfortable with the plastic backs. I have my husband really push them in and secure them. I’ve only had one issue with safety eyes and I think it was because I used some spare oddball ones as joints in a toy elephant. It was for a ten-year-old-girl and I think she played tug of war with it. When you do the owl, if you choose to do the plastic back, this yarn is way too thick to get the gasket through both the white and the color of the owl, so secure the backing tightly to the white and you shouldn’t have any issues. I always tell people with any of my stuffed toys that they do have safety eyes so watch your child if they stick things in their mouth, that they are a choking hazard.

What about using small black buttons for eyes? They could be firmly sewn in place. The black of the eyes could also be sewn with black yarn instead of buttons or safety eyes. I’d love to make this when my crochet skills have improved! A certain girl I know would love one in green! 🙂

Hi there! I like e in France so can only get some BERNAT BLANKET YARN through the internet: how much yarn do an owl require? No one whole skein right?
Heather Rae says
It doesn’t take much at all! I don’t know how many ounces, but I’m thinking you can get at least five Owls out of one ball of the bigger Bernat Blanket Rolls.

This is super cute and I immediately thought it would go well with the owl pillow you made with the purple Bernat Baby Blanket yarn. Just the reason I needed to go buy yarn! 🙂

I just whipped my first one up and have some felt heart type buttons I am going to sew onto it and send these to my granddaughters for Valentines Day. Perhaps with a note saying, Owl always love you every day of the year! ~Nanna I just have to run to JoAnn’s for the buttons for the nose. I tried to free hand it with some orange RedHeart that I have and I didn’t like it. Thank you so much for another wonderful, free and simply cute pattern. I can see why your daughter loves it, it’s precious! My next one is going to be in the bright purple. 🙂

Anyone else have problems finding the orange triangle buttons at JoAnns? I went there today and couldn’t find them.
Amy says
I know this is a couple of months old, but I looked yesterday at my JoAnn’s and they didn’t have them either.

Omg, i love this!!! However, I have this yarn leftover from another project, but I am not sure if I have enough. Did you use the whole ball, or do you happen to know the weight of yarn you used ?

Thank you for this great pattern! Dropping a note to say that the owl looks just as adorable with crocheted cartoon eyes and a bit of yellow yarn for the beak – in case anyone is crafting for an infant or foregoing plastic pieces.

Did you flatten the wings and sew them on, or sew around the entire edge? I wish there had been some photos of that.
