Crochet Curling Stone Applique

August 18, 2026

I’m a little late getting this month’s square finished, but Square #8 of our Winter Activities Crochet-Along is finally here! We’re heading back to the ice for another favorite winter sport: curling!

This Crochet Curling Stone Appliqué is a simple design, but I love how recognizable it is with the two shades of gray and bright red handle. It’s a fun addition to our collection of winter activities and looks great stitched onto the 10-inch crochet square we’ve been using throughout the CAL.

And of course, you don’t have to make the entire blanket to use this pattern! The curling stone can be used on its own as an appliqué for other winter and sports-themed crochet projects.

Our Winter Activities Crochet-Along is a 12-month project filled with cozy winter themes, ice sports, and snowy fun. Each appliqué can stand on its own or be turned into a full blanket as we go.

So far we’ve stitched up:
Square 1: Ice Skates
Square 2: Hockey Sticks and Puck
Square 3: Skis and Ski Poles
Square 4: Snowboard & Goggles
Square 5: Snowflake
Square 6: Zamboni
Square 7: Ice Fishing

Each design celebrates a favorite winter pastime, making this blanket a fun project for skaters, skiers, hockey players, snowboarders, and winter enthusiasts alike.

Materials

  • Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Heather Gray

Crochet Curling Stone

Begin with Heather Gray.

Chain 15. Work 2 SC in second chain from hook, SC in next 12 chains, 2 SC in last chain. Chain 1, turn. (16 SC)
Row 2: SC in each stitch across. Chain 1, turn. (16 SC)
Row 3: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 14 stitches, 2 SC in last stitch. Chain 1, turn. (18 SC)
Row 4: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 16 stitches, 2 SC in last stitch. Join Light Gray, chain 1, turn. (20 SC)
Rows 5–9: SC in each stitch across. Chain 1, turn. (20 SC)
Row 10: SC decrease over first 2 stitches, SC in next 16 stitches, SC decrease over last 2 stitches. Join Heather Gray, chain 1, turn. (18 SC)
Row 11: SC in each stitch across. Chain 1, turn. (18 SC)
Row 12: SC decrease over first 2 stitches, SC in next 14 stitches, SC decrease over last 2 stitches. Chain 1, turn. (16 SC)
Row 13: SC in each stitch across. Chain 1, turn. (16 SC)
Row 14: SC decrease over first 2 stitches, SC in next 12 stitches, SC decrease over last 2 stitches. Chain 1, turn. (14 SC)
Row 15: SC in each stitch across. (14 SC)

Do not turn. Continue working SC stitches around the outside edge of the curling stone to smooth and round the shape. Switch between Light Gray and Heather Gray as needed so the edging coordinates with the colors of the stone.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Curling Stone Handle

With Cherry Red, chain 15, HDC in 3rd chain from hook, HDC in next chain, DC in next 8 chains, HDC in last 3 chains. Chain 1, turn.
Row 2: SC in first 3 stitches. Leave remaining stitches unworked. Chain 1, turn.
Row 3: SC in 3 stitches. Chain 1, turn.
Row 4: SC in 3 stitches. Do not turn.
Chain 8. Work 2 HDC in second chain from hook, HDC in remaining chains. Work 3 SC along the last 3 stitches of Row 4, then continue working SC stitches a short way down the left side to smooth and round the edge.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Assembly

Position the curling stone in the bottom center of your crochet square and stitch it securely in place.

Next, layer the red handle along the top of the curling stone. Using the long yarn tail and a tapestry needle, stitch the handle in place. As you sew, slightly curve the handle to give it the classic curling stone shape shown in the photos.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Eight squares down and four more winter activities to go!
