Merry Fishmas! Crochet Under the Sea Christmas Ornaments

What started as one little Christmas tree ornament has somehow turned into an entire Under the Sea Christmas collection… and I am completely on board!

After sharing the new Red Heart All-in-One Star Gaze yarn, I knew I wanted to use it to make a Christmas tree ornament. I’ve made little tree ornaments with the other All-in-One yarns in the past, so of course Star Gaze needed its turn.

But when I shared the star motif, so many of you immediately saw something else…

A STARFISH!

And once I saw it, I couldn’t unsea it LOL!

That got me thinking: if we have a starfish Christmas tree, clearly it needs a few underwater friends. So I went diving through my own pattern archives and realized I already had everything I needed for a whole Merry Fishmas ornament collection!

Starfish Granny Square Christmas Tree

The project that started it all!

Use my Crochet Granny Square Tree Ornament pattern, but make the project using the new Red Heart All-in-One Star Gaze yarn. The yarn creates the star motif for you, and suddenly our traditional Christmas tree has a very fun under-the-sea twist.

I love that the orange star against the blues immediately gives it that starfish look.

Santa Octopus

Obviously our little octopus needed to get dressed for Fishmas!

I used my Mini No-Sew Crochet Octopus pattern, substituting Red Heart worsted weight yarn for the Bernat Maker yarn used in the original pattern. This makes him a great little size for an ornament.

Then I added a tiny Santa hat, because nothing says Christmas under the sea quite like an octopus in a Santa hat.

Mini Crochet Santa Hat Pattern:
Using red yarn and a size H crochet hook (or smaller):

Round 1: Make a Magic Ring, ch 1 and make 4 SC in ring. Join, ch 1.
Round 2: SC in each stitch around. Join, ch 1. (4 SC)
Round 3: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next; repeat around. Join, ch 1. (6 SC)
Round 4: SC in each stitch around. Join, ch 1.
Round 5: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 2; repeat around. Join, ch 1. (8 SC)
Round 6: SC in each stitch around. Join with white yarn, ch 1.
Round 7: SC in each stitch around. Join, ch 1.
Round 8: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next; repeat around. Fasten off.

Bend the top of the hat over and stitch it in place. Add a little white bobble stitch to the tip, then stitch the hat onto your octopus.

I also added a tiny holly button for an extra festive touch!

Candy Cane Jellyfish

This one practically made itself into a Christmas ornament!

My red and white jellyfish already has major candy cane vibes, so all I needed to do was add a hanging loop and a cute Christmas button.

The original pattern was created for the 4th of July, but take away the blue and suddenly she is ready for Christmas. I love finding completely new ways to use seasonal patterns!

Christmas Light Sea Turtle

And then there’s this guy. I think he might be my favorite!

I used my Crochet Sea Turtle pattern but swapped the Bernat Blanket yarn from the original for Red Heart worsted weight yarn. The smaller yarn turns him into the perfect ornament size.

But obviously a Christmas sea turtle needed a little decorating…

I wrapped a miniature Christmas craft light strand around his shell so he looks like he got tangled up in the Christmas lights. Or maybe he decorated himself? Either way, he understood the assignment.

Who knew my craft room Christmas tree needed an Under the Sea section?!

These will be such a fun addition once I get my tree set up for the holidays, and I love that this whole collection came together using patterns I already had. A few yarn swaps, some Christmas buttons, a Santa hat and a strand of teeny-tiny lights turned four completely different projects into one very festive little school of sea creatures.

Or should I say… Christmas school? 😆
