I’ve been getting so many messages asking about this year’s crochet-along, and I love that excitement so much — so here’s what I’m finally ready to share:
This year, we’re doing two CALs!
The first is our winter project:
Skate to Snow — a Winter Activities Crochet-Along.
This CAL is built around 12 winter-themed appliqués, each celebrating something we love about the season. Some are inspired by skating and hockey, some by snowy days and outdoor fun, and some by cozy winter moments like hot cocoa, soft mittens, and warming up by the fire. TAt the end of the year, all 12 squares are joined together and finished with a border to create a blanket.
If you’ve crocheted along with me before, this CAL works just like my Under the Sea blanket from a few years ago. We’ll be making solid crochet squares and decorating each one with a themed appliqué every month.
That simply means you’ll crochet one solid DC granny square each month, add the winter appliqué that I post for that month to it. You can see my Under the Sea CAL HERE for reference.
My son Chase plays hockey for two teams and my daughter Zoe has been competitively figure skating for the past year. So somewhere along the way, I officially entered my Skate Mom era: rink mornings, hockey games, chilly bleachers, and a project bag that goes everywhere with me… and honestly, I’m loving every frosty minute of it. That season of life is what sparked this whole idea. This CAL is a reflection of what winter looks like in our house right now: busy, cold, exciting, and always stitched together with yarn.
Even if winter sports aren’t your thing, cozy winter crochet absolutely is. This blanket is all about that feeling of curling up with yarn, watching skating, hockey, or a binge-worthy show, and stitching something warm and beautiful while the weather outside is cold and wintry. Plus the 2026 Winter Olympics dominating headlines and tv stations, it just feels like the perfect moment to celebrate all that winter energy through crochet.
About the Schedule
New squares for the Skate to Snow CAL will be released by the 15th of each month.
I won’t be doing “the first of the month” releases this year and that’s intentional. Between skating competitions and hockey tournaments, the beginning of the month is often travel time for us. I never want to rush patterns or sacrifice quality just to hit a calendar date. This gives me the space to make these designs as thoughtful, fun, and polished as they deserve to be. Possibly with video tutorials as well!
The Second Crochet-Along
Later in the year, we’ll move into a second, Christmas-themed CAL, which will be released alongside a printed story book (similar to my Earth Day Counting Book) — something I’ve been working toward for a long time and am so excited to finally share more about when the time is right.
Keep an eye to for the Christmas CAL around July. It will be shorter crochet-along that will flow naturally into the holiday season and won’t disrupt the Winter Activities CAL. They will be in sync!
How This CAL Works
You can absolutely make the full blanket of 12 squares with appliqués…
or you can simply pick the appliqués that fit your life.
Each design works beautifully on its own for:
- sweaters
- tote bags
- pillows
- gifts
- or any winter project you dream up
All of the patterns will be free on Repeat Crafter Me, so you can join at any time and crochet what you love, at your own pace. Feel free to pick and choose which winter appliqués fit best for you and stay tuned for some bonus designs and ideas as well. It was hard to fit only 12 in!
About the Vision
The image you see at the beginning of this post is my vision board for the Winter Activities CAL. It captures the colors, the energy, and the vibe I’m going for. Even though the final squares will, of course, be crocheted and naturally look different (and less detailed) in yarn. Think of it as a roadmap: playful winter activities, bold pops of blue, purple, and cool neutrals, and that mix of icy, sporty, and cozy that makes winter feel so special.
I’ll be using my tried-and-true Red Heart Super Saver yarn to bring it all to life, because its huge range of colors makes it perfect for recreating this palette while still giving us durable, everyday crochet you can really use and love.
Let’s Get Started
To get started, you’ll want to crochet your Easy Double Crochet Squares, which will serve as the base for all of the appliqué designs in this CAL. This square is simple, sturdy, and flexible — you can make it as big or as small as you’d like just by adding or stopping rounds. It’s a great go-to square that works beautifully for blankets, pillows, or any project where you want a clean, solid background for appliqués.
I chose to stop after 8 rounds, which gave me a square that measures about 10″ × 10″, making it a perfect size for this blanket. Feel free to make all 12 base squares now so they’re ready to go, or crochet them alongside each appliqué as we move through the CAL.

I saw a review of mobile-friendly sites on a forum and this one kept popping up as a top choice. I wanted to find a place where I could play some quick rounds while I’m on my lunch break at work. I logged into Bitdreams Online and the variety was actually better than I expected. For people in Australia they have some very fast deposit methods and a solid loyalty program. It was a nice little break from my spreadsheets today.
