If you haven’t seen Disney Pixar’s Inside Out, you need to! It’s a movie based around 5 feelings that are in a young girls head: Anger, Sadness, Disgust, Fear… and JOY! Joy is the most important emotion, the main character in the movie and after many requests, I have crocheted a Joy inspired hat!
Materials:
– Worsted weight yarn in Cream, White, Black, and Blue. I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Beige and Aqua.
– Red Heart Boutique Sashay Sequins in Mediterranean (or another blue)
– Size H Crochet Hook
– Tapestry needle

Joy’s Eyes (left):
Magic ring, ch 1 and make 8 SC in ring, pull tight, join, ch 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, ch 1
Round 3: 2 HDC in first, HDC in next, in first 6 stitches = 12 HDC, * 2 SC in next, SC in next, repeat around until end of row, join, chain 1
Round 4: SC in first 10 stitches, HDC in next 2 stitches, 2 DC in next 5, HDC in next 5, SC in last, join, fasten off leaving long tail.
Middle eye:
Starting with black yarn
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 3 HDC, 2 SC, 3 HDC, 2 SC, join with blue
Round 2: SC in each stitch around (I found it helps to make one extra SC at the end of the round to make it lay nicely.) Fasten off and weave in ends except one long one to sew onto bigger white eye.
Nose:
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 2 SC, 3 HDC, 2 DC, 3 HDC, 2 SC, join, fasten off
Mouth:
With pink yarn and tapestry needle stitch on a mouth. I took a darker pink marker and colored on a little shade to the upper “lip”.
Alternatively you could crochet an open mouth although I wasn’t thrilled with how this turned out.
SC in first 2 stitches, change to white, HDC in next 2, DC until 4 chains left, HDC in next two, change back to black, SC in last two.
Slip stitch in back loops only with pink yarn make a “chain 2, Slip stitch in 2nd chain” on each corner of the mouth.
Hair:
I chose Red Heart Boutique Sashay Sequins because I thought the color, texture and sparkle mimicked the characters in the movie (as in this close up shot of Joy).
Along the first two rounds of the hat I looped strands of the boutique yarn around two DC at a time using the same method as in the mane of my Unicorn Hat. You can fill in more hair after you start trimming and see what areas need more.
Time to play barber shop! Cut and style the hair. You can weave in some strands into the hat with a large tapestry needle and hot glue the shorter strands down to the longer strands (I never actually glued to the base hat) you could absolutely use worsted weight yarn as well. Keep in mind that it will take more strands to get the same effect.
Here is what the back of the hat looks like!
